U3A SkegnessLocal History Group 3 of 3

Other activities

We have been on five walks around Skegness. The first and last ones looked at historical developments in the area between the Pier, St. Matthew’s Church and the Clock Tower. On the second we walked along High Street and Roman Bank. The third and fourth walks were comparative studies of Lumley Road in the 1930’s and now with photos, led and organised by Ray Ridout and Ken Wilkinson.

We have had four reminiscence evenings when Skegness native members and guests have indulged themselves and informed newcomers about what Skegness was like when they were younger.

We had a stand at Spilsby Local History Society’s Open Day on 13 September 2008. As a consequence we are invited to go to their monthly lectures or similar events.

These are normally held on the: -

First Monday of each month at 7.30 pm at the Franklin Hall, Halton Road, Spilsby.

In October 2009, Marjorie Wilkinson discussed the work she has done on the 1953 East Coast Flood Disaster.

In February 2010, Jennifer Mackley led a similar discussion on her article entitled Skegness: From an agricultural village to a seaside town.
