U3A SkegnessLocal History Group 2 of 3

Publications

In 2005 we produced a booklet entitled Notes on the Local History of Skegness from the Earliest Times to 1939. This brought together personal notes on the history of Skegness, prepared by members of the group, drawn mainly from secondary or tertiary sources.

In 2007 we produced a second booklet: Skegness through the Years. This contains two articles on the history of Skegness:-
'Skegness in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries' and 'Skegness:From an agricultural village to a seaside town'. There are also three short articles on men who have had a significant influence on the development of Skegness:-

The Earls of Scarbrough
Mr Henry Vivian Tippet and
Mr Rowland Henry Jenkins.

Jim Mackley has also produced a longer version of the first article in this booklet, entitled

A Study of the Skegness Parish Registers
from 1653 to 1812.

This contains detailed notes on each of the eleven main families who lived in Skegness during the period of the study, together with reconstructions of their family trees. These books are available at £3 for the first and £4 each for the other two, plus £1 postage and packing (where appropriate)
from: Jim.

As part of the same project, one of the Group's members - Marjorie Wilkinson - published a book entitled 'Skegness at War'. The book is filled with stories of happenings in Skegness during the Second World War, and is on sale at W H Smith and Waterstones, priced at £3.50.
