U3A SKEGNESS

French

Our friendly & informal French group meets on Tuesday mornings from 10am to 11.30am usually at 15 Castleton Boulevard.

Some have joined as total beginners, others perhaps feeling "rusty".  No matter from what starting point my aim is to encourage everyone to start talking in French, for instance:

to be able to book a hotel room
to be able to order food from a menu or buy provisions in a shop or at the market
to ask directions (and understand the replies!)
to talk about family, hobbies & home
to be able to use and understand numbers, dates & times

We may watch a video, work from a book with CD, read simple articles or play bingo

 Quizzes

When there are quizzes advertised, I inform the group and invite them to take part. It is an informal night.

Normally, each member pays their own entrance fee on arrival and then the teams are chosen for the event.  On previous occasions we have had the pleasure of being first and gaining a good prize, and on others coming last and have been awarded the wooden spoon (the booby prize)!  It is a good night out.

If anyone hears of a quiz locally please let me know.

We all look forward to seeing you there,

HOLIDAY CLUB

The group began in March 2008 with some of the members going to Ostend on a five day break, and separately, with a different coach company, two of our group went to Ostend on an eight day tour. It was all very much more enjoyable in a group.

Building on the success of our first trip, later that same year six of our group went to Dublin, followed by a Christmas holiday break in Normandy, France.

In the New Year we agreed to go in June 2008 on a twelve day cruise to the Baltic, departing from Harwich. We called in at Helsinki, Copenhagen, Tallin, and St Petersburgh. We all enjoyed it so much that we planned to go on another cruise, but next time with a different company.

In October 2008 five of the group flew to Calgary in Canada from Heathrow. Following a short stay in Banffe, a scenic mountain resort on the edge of the Rocky mountains, they transferred to Jasper. Later, they boarded the famous Rocky Mountaineer train to voyage across the Rockies to Vancouver Island for a two night stay in this most amazingly beautiful haven. Sadly, after this it was home time and they flew from Vancouver to Heathrow and on to Skegness.

At Christmas 2008 nine of us had a very happy festive time in the Lake District.

During 2009 we have been very adventurous and have been to Jersey and the Isle of Wight. Also, some of us went on a very enjoyable Norwegian cruise which inspired us to plan ahead. So, then, in September six of us flew from East Midlands to Crete to board the Ocean Village 2 for a fifteen day cruise of the Mediterranean.

At Christmas time eleven of us will be going away to Winchester with a local coach company.

As a result of the friendships created on the group holidays, some of the group have paired up and ventured away on other holiday breaks. However it is true to say that going away in a group is great fun.

All tours / holidays are selected from both local and national travel brochures.

For further information please contact Carrol on 01754 763 224, although the group is on hold until the New Year. Hopefully, in 2010 we may be booking a river cruise, either on the Rhine or the Danube.

Guidelines for Walkers Walking Grroup

Each walker is responsible for ensuring her/his fitness and preparedness for the
walk. This includes suitable footwear with adequate tread. If in doubt about
fitness or the requirements of the walk, contact the leader for advice prior to the
walk. People with medication needs &/or disabilities which may cause problems
during the walk must also contact the leader prior to the walk.

All walkers are responsible for carrying their own supplies including first aid
equipment, any required medication and adequate water. Please discuss with the Leader.

Walkers should not walk ahead of the walk leader without invitation nor
leave the group without advising the walk leader or back marker.
Walkers should ensure that the walkers behind are in view, and if not send
a message ahead to the leader.

On public roads where there are no footpaths, walkers should normally walk on
the right hand side of the road in single file. On shared trails, walkers should
keep as far to the left as practicable to avoid blocking the trail for other users.

Simple rules for a safe an enjoyable walk!!
